Your fence tester reads 900 volts on a wire that should be pushing 7,000. Or worse, the cows are standing in the neighbor’s coastal field and the hot wire didn’t so much as tickle them on the way through.

An electric fence not working is one of the most common calls we get at Brazos Ridge Fence Co., and here’s the good news: about 8 out of 10 of these problems come down to three things. A dead or weak charger, a bad ground system, or a short somewhere along the line. All three are things you can check yourself in an afternoon with a $30 fence tester and a little patience.

This guide walks the whole troubleshooting process in the order a pro would, charger outward. We chase electric fence problems every week across McLennan, Bosque, and Falls counties, so this advice is built for Central Texas: dry summers, cracked clay, hog damage, and grass that eats voltage alive by June.

Start at the Charger: Is Your Electric Fence Energizer Working?

Never start by walking the fence line. Start at the box. If the charger isn’t putting out power, you can walk five miles of wire and learn nothing.

Here’s the test. Disconnect the fence lead wire and the ground wire from the charger completely. Now touch your fence tester across the two terminals on the charger itself, fence terminal to ground terminal. You should read the charger’s rated open-circuit voltage, usually somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 volts depending on the unit.

Two outcomes, two very different paths:

The charger reads strong with the fence disconnected. Good. The charger is fine, and your problem lives out on the fence or in the ground system. Skip ahead to the next sections.

The charger reads weak or dead with the fence disconnected. The problem is the charger or its power supply. Before you buy a new unit, check the cheap stuff first:

  • Is the outlet live? Plug a drill or a lamp into it. GFCI outlets in barns trip all the time, especially after rain.
  • On battery units, load-test the battery. A 12-volt battery that reads 12.6 volts sitting idle can still collapse under load. Batteries in Central Texas heat rarely last past 3 or 4 years.
  • On solar units, clean the panel and make sure a tree or a shed shadow hasn’t crept over it since spring. A dirty panel can cut charging by a third.
  • Check the fuse if your model has one, and look for scorch marks near the terminals. Lightning kills more chargers around here than old age does.

Dale, who runs about 40 pairs east of Crawford, called us last August convinced his whole perimeter fence had shorted out because nothing was hot. We tested the charger first thing: dead as a hammer, cooked by a lightning strike two pastures over. A new 6-joule charger ran him $289, and the fence itself needed nothing. Ten-minute diagnosis. He’d been budgeting $2,000 for a rewire he didn’t need.

Check the Ground System, Because Most Weak Fences Fail Here

If the charger tests strong but the fence is weak, check grounding before you go hunting shorts. Poor grounding is the single most common cause of a weak electric fence, and it’s especially bad in Central Texas because our clay soil dries out and pulls away from the ground rods every summer.

An electric fence is a loop. The pulse leaves the charger, travels down the wire, passes through the animal, goes into the soil, and returns to the charger through the ground rods. If the soil connection is poor, the loop can’t complete, and the animal feels a weak tap instead of a real correction. The fence looks fine. The wire even reads decent voltage. But nothing respects it.

Here’s the field test for grounding:

  1. Walk out at least 300 feet from the charger.
  2. Short the fence out on purpose by leaning a few steel T-posts against the hot wire so current is forced to flow.
  3. Go back and put your tester between the last ground rod and the soil a foot away from it.
  4. If you read more than about 400 volts on the ground rod, your grounding is inadequate.

The fix is usually more rods, deeper rods, or wetter rods. The standard that works here: at least three galvanized ground rods, 6 feet deep, spaced 10 feet apart, connected with one continuous insulated wire and good clamps. Don’t mix copper rods with galvanized wire; the joint corrodes and quietly chokes the system.

Marcy keeps horses on 12 acres outside China Spring, and her fence went from hot to useless every July like clockwork. Her single 3-foot ground rod was sitting in powder-dry clay by midsummer. We drove two more 6-foot rods, tied all three together, and told her to dump a bucket of water on the rod bed during long dry spells. Total fix was $85 in materials and an hour of labor. That fence has held 6,000-plus volts through two droughts since.

Walk the Line: Finding the Short When Your Electric Fence Isn’t Working

Charger’s good, ground’s good, but the voltage is still low? Now you walk. Somewhere out there, your fence is leaking power to the ground, and your job is to find the leak.

Before you take a step, know what you’re looking for:

  • Vegetation load. Grass, weeds, and brush touching the hot wire bleed voltage constantly. One wet sunflower won’t kill a fence, but a quarter mile of johnsongrass laying on the bottom wire will drag a 7,000-volt fence under 2,000. If your fence line looks like a hay crop, start there.   • Cracked or missing insulators. Sun-rotted plastic insulators let the hot wire touch the post. On a steel T-post, that’s a dead short. Look for black scorch marks and listen for a snapping tick.
  • Broken or sagging wire. A hot wire lying on the ground, wrapped in a fallen limb, or touching a barbed strand below it will short. Hogs are a common culprit here, and if you’re seeing rooted-up dirt along the line, read our post on feral hog fence damage before you patch and repeat.
  • Bad splices and rusted wire. Every hand-twisted splice is a resistor. Rusty wire carries pulse poorly. Proper splice sleeves or figure-8 knots fix it.
  • Underground lead-out wire. The insulated cable that carries power under a gate is a classic hidden failure. Nicked insulation lets the pulse leak straight into the soil where you’ll never see it. If the fence is hot on the charger side of a gate and dead past it, you’ve found your section.
  • Gate handles and jumpers. Spring gate handles corrode, and jumper wires get knocked loose by cattle and equipment.

The fast way to walk a line is the half-split method. Most electric fences have cut-out switches or places you can disconnect a section. Kill power to half the fence. If voltage jumps back up, the short is in the half you disconnected. Split that half again. Three or four splits will corner a fault on a mile of fence in under an hour, instead of walking the whole thing staring at every insulator.

Better still, spend $70 to $130 on a digital fault finder. It reads voltage and current together and literally points an arrow toward the short. It pays for itself the first Saturday it saves.

At night, shorts show themselves. Walk the line after dark and look for the blue-white arc, or tune your truck radio to a dead AM station and drive the line. The tick gets louder as you close in on the fault.

What the Voltage Numbers Mean

A fence tester is only useful if you know what reading you’re aiming for. Here’s the cheat sheet we work from, along with typical fix costs when a reading comes up short.

Two notes on targets. Goats and sheep need more voltage than cattle because wool and hair insulate, so aim for 4,500 volts minimum on small stock. When to Stop Troubleshooting and Call a Pro

Most electric fence problems are honest DIY territory. Some aren’t, and knowing the difference saves money and occasionally a trip to the ER.

Stop and call somebody when:

  • The fence crosses water or a creek bottom. Water gaps short constantly and rebuilding them right is its own skill. Never troubleshoot a hot wire while standing in water.
  • The charger has internal damage. If a charger is buzzing, smells hot, or has visible scorching, unplug it and leave it unplugged. Don’t open the case. These units store real energy.
  • There’s any chance the fence contacts utility power. A hot wire tangled with a downed power line is a killer, not a fence problem. Stay back and call the utility.
  • The whole system is undersized or aged out. If you’re fighting the same fence every month, the math changes. Sometimes the right answer is retiring a tired hot wire and building permanent fence. A properly built barbed wire fence needs no charger, no battery, and no Saturday walks with a tester, and for working pens and high-pressure areas, pipe fence ends the conversation entirely.

A 10-Minute Monthly Check That Prevents Most of This

The cheapest troubleshooting is the kind you never have to do. Once a month, do this:

  1. Read voltage at the charger terminals, then at the far end of the fence. Write both numbers down. A slow decline over months is a warning you can act on before the fence fails.
  2. Eyeball the ground rods and clamps. Tug the wire connections.
  3. Drive or walk the line looking for sag, limbs, and hog rooting.
  4. Knock down vegetation before it touches wire, not after.
  5. After any big storm, test before you trust.

Keep a log taped inside the barn door. When a fence that reads 6,800 volts every month suddenly reads 4,100, your search shrinks from “the whole fence” to “whatever happened recently.” That habit alone cuts most troubleshooting jobs from hours to minutes.

The click is the charger firing its pulse, so the unit is alive.
