What Drought Does to the Clay Under Your Fence Line
Most of the ground between Waco and Valley Mills is expansive clay. Blackland Prairie soil is famous for it. When that clay is wet, it swells. When it dries out, it shrinks, and it doesn’t shrink a little. It shrinks enough to open surface cracks two or three inches wide and several feet deep.
Your fence posts are set in that clay. When the soil shrinks away from a post, the post loses the friction grip that holds it plumb. Then the wire tension takes over. A barbed wire fence pulling 150 to 250 pounds of tension per strand will lean any post that’s lost its grip, and it always pulls toward the corners and low spots.

Here’s the part most folks miss. The damage isn’t done during the drought. It’s done in the cycle. The 5 Drought Fence Problems We See Most in Central Texas
After enough dry summers in this county, the failure list gets predictable. Here’s what shows up on our work orders every August, roughly in order.
1. Leaning line posts. Wood posts set 24 to 30 inches deep lose soil grip first. T-posts actually handle drought a little better because they’re driven, not set in a dug hole, but they’ll still lean where the cracking is bad. We cover the full diagnosis in our guide to leaning fence posts.
2. Sagging gates. A gate is a lever hanging off one post. When drought loosens that hinge post, a 12 foot gate multiplies the problem. The latch end drops an inch for every small tip of the post. If you’re lifting your gate to latch it, the post moved, not the gate.
3. Failed corner and brace assemblies. Corners carry the tension of the whole stretch. When clay shrinks off a corner post, hundreds of feet of wire tension start pulling it over. Once a corner goes, every span it anchors goes slack behind it.
4. Slack wire and dropped stays. Wire that was tight in spring goes loose by August because the posts holding it moved inward. Loose barbed wire is how calves learn to push through. Loose net wire is how feral hogs get a snout under the bottom.
5. Heaved posts. Less common but real. Repeated shrink and swell can jack a shallow post upward over several seasons, an inch or two a year, until it’s barely holding.

Real Numbers: What Drought Fence Damage Cost 3 Local Ranchers
Talk is cheap, so here’s what this actually looked like on three jobs from recent dry summers.
Crawford, hinge post failure. Dale runs about 60 cow-calf pairs west of Crawford. His main entrance gate, a 16 footer on a wood hinge post, dropped until it was dragging dirt. He’d been chaining it shut for a month. The hinge post had leaned 6 inches out of plumb in cracked clay. We pulled it, set a 4 inch pipe post in concrete with a proper deadman, rehung and adjusted the gate. Total: $1,150. He waited a season longer than he should have, and the dragging gate had also tweaked the hinges, which added to the bill.
China Spring, corner blowout. Marcy has 45 acres off Wortham Bend Road. During the 2024 drought her southeast corner post leaned enough to slack about 900 feet of 5 strand barbed wire on two sides. A neighbor’s bull found the slack section and her heifers found the neighbor’s oat patch. Rebuilding the corner with a pipe H-brace, restretching both runs, and splicing two damaged sections came to $2,340. The vet bill and the apology to the neighbor were extra.
Lorena, the cheap fix that wasn’t. Jim, south of Lorena, tried the classic DIY move on a leaned line post: dig it out, straighten it, tamp it back. It worked until the first good rain, then the post leaned again because the disturbed clay never regained its grip. He called us after round two. Resetting 11 line posts properly, with compacted base material instead of loose native clay, ran him $880. His first two weekends of labor ran him free but bought nothing.
The pattern in all three: waiting made it more expensive. A $100 problem in June is a $1,000 problem by October.

Two things jump out of that table. First, corners and gates are where the money is, which is exactly why they deserve the best materials up front. Second, restretching wire is cheap, but it only holds if the posts holding the wire are sound. Restretching onto loose posts is throwing money away.

How to Protect Your Fence Before the Next Dry Spell
You can’t stop the clay from shrinking. You can make your fence a lot less sensitive to it. Here’s what actually works, in rough order of bang for buck.
Walk your line in early summer, not late summer. Catch a corner at a 2 degree lean and it’s a brace repair. Catch it at 10 degrees and it’s a rebuild. June beats September every time.
Fix small leans before the fall rains. Remember the lock-in cycle. A post straightened and properly tamped before the rain returns to plumb. A post left leaning gets cemented into its lean by swelling clay.
Upgrade corners and gate posts to pipe set in concrete. Concrete spreads the load and pipe doesn’t rot, so the assembly rides out shrink and swell cycles that wreck shallow wood corners. Deeper is better in clay. We set gate and corner posts 36 to 48 inches deep here for exactly this reason.
Don’t overtighten wire in August. Wire stretched drum-tight in dry heat gets even tighter in a cold snap and pulls harder on drought-weakened posts. Snug is enough. You can take up slack again in spring.
Watch your water gaps and low crossings. Drought drops creek levels and exposes fence that’s about to take the full force of the first flood. Drought and flood damage are two halves of the same Texas year.
Keep an eye on official drought conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor at drought.gov updates weekly and shows exactly how deep the dry spell is in McLennan, Bosque, and Falls counties. When your area slides into D2 or worse, that’s your cue to walk the fence line.

When to Stop DIY and Call a Fence Professional
Plenty of drought fixes are honest weekend work. Restapling wire, driving a replacement T-post, tightening a gate’s adjustment bolts. Have at it.
But know where the line is. Call a pro when:
- A corner or H-brace is leaning. Corners hold the stored tension of hundreds of feet of wire. Cut or release that tension wrong and it can whip. This is the single most dangerous fence repair there is.
- Wire needs a full restretch. Barbed wire under stretcher tension will find your forearms if a splice or tool slips. Gloves and eye protection are minimum, and experience is the real safety gear.
- A gate post needs replacing. Getting the depth, concrete, and hinge alignment right the first time is the difference between a 15 year fix and a 15 month one.
- You’ve straightened the same post twice. The soil grip is gone. It needs a proper reset with compacted base material or an upgrade to pipe, not a third tamping.
