Grab a ten-year-old wood post on your place and give it a hard shove. If it wobbles, creaks, or snaps clean off at the dirt, you just found the most common fence failure in Central Texas.
Here’s the strange part. Pull that broken post and the buried bottom two feet often look fine. So does the top. The damage sits in a six-inch band right at the soil line, and that’s no accident. Fence post rot almost always starts at the ground line because that narrow zone gives wood-eating fungi everything they need at once.

What Causes Fence Post Rot Right at the Ground Line
Rot isn’t the wood “going bad” on its own. It’s a living fungus eating the post, and fungi need four things: moisture, oxygen, mild temperatures, and food. The food is your post.
Deep underground there’s moisture but very little oxygen, so fungi struggle. Above ground there’s oxygen but the post dries out fast after rain. The ground line is the overlap zone. Soil holds moisture against the wood, air is still available, and Texas soil temperatures sit in the fungal comfort range most of the year.
That’s why a post can be solid at the top, solid at the bottom, and completely hollowed out in the middle. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory has studied wood decay for over a century, and their findings back up what every fence builder sees in the field: decay concentrates where moisture and oxygen meet.
Two other culprits speed things up around here:
- Grass and brush against the post. Vegetation traps humidity at the ground line and keeps the wood from drying between rains.

What Makes Rot Worse in Central Texas Pastures
The ground-line science is the same everywhere, but a few local factors make fence post rot move faster in our part of the state.
Untreated or poorly treated posts. A bare pine post set in Central Texas soil can rot through in 2 to 5 years. Properly pressure-treated pine rated for ground contact should give you 20 to 30. The problem is that a lot of bargain posts are treated to a retention level meant for above-ground use, not burial. If the treatment only penetrated a quarter inch, the fungus just eats its way in behind it.

Concrete collars done wrong. Concrete poured level with or below grade forms a cup that catches water and holds it against the post. We dig up “concreted” posts all the time that rotted faster than posts set in plain dirt.
Our wet-dry cycle. Central Texas swings between soaking spring rains and baked-hard summers. Each cycle opens checks and cracks in the wood at the soil line, and every crack is a new doorway for fungus and moisture.
Robert Mynar, who runs cattle on about 90 acres outside West, called us in March after a wind storm laid over 40 feet of his perimeter fence. The wire was fine. The posts had snapped at the dirt like pencils. They were untreated pine a previous owner set around 2012. We replaced 22 posts and re-stretched the wire for $1,890, and he told us the worst part was that the fence looked fine from the truck the week before.
That’s the trap with rot. It hides until something pushes on it, and that something is usually a storm or a bull.
How to Spot Rotten Fence Posts Before They Drop Your Wire
You don’t need special tools to check for fence post rot. You need a screwdriver, a hammer, and an hour walking your fence line. Here’s the routine we use:
- Push hard on every wood post. A sound post barely moves. A post that flexes at the ground line while the top swings is telling on itself.
- Do the tap test. Knock on the post with a hammer just above the soil. Solid wood rings sharp. Rotten wood answers with a dull thud, like knocking on a watermelon.
- Probe at the ground line. Push a flathead screwdriver into the wood right at the dirt. If it sinks in more than a quarter inch with hand pressure, decay has started.
- Scrape back the soil. Pull dirt and grass away from the post an inch or two down. Soft, dark, stringy, or spongy wood below grade means the rot is ahead of what you can see.
- Look for mushrooms and staining. Fungal growth at the base, or a dark wet-looking band that never dries, both point to active decay.

Fixing Fence Post Rot: What Works and What’s a Waste of Money
Once rot is established at the ground line, you can’t reverse it. Fungus has consumed wood fiber, and no spray or filler puts that strength back. So every “fix” is really one of three moves: reinforce the post, sister a new support next to it, or replace it. Here’s how the options stack up for a working ranch fence:

A few honest notes on that table.
Repair spikes are a bandage, not a cure. They drive into the ground alongside the post and clamp onto the sound wood above the rot. On a light-duty line post they’ll buy you years. On a corner post under thousands of pounds of wire tension, they will fail, usually at the worst time.
Patching rot with concrete or filler is throwing money in a hole. The fungus keeps eating behind the patch and you’ve just hidden the evidence.

Linda Vasek near Valley Mills learned that one the expensive way. She paid a handyman $260 to drive repair spikes on two rotten corner posts on her horse trap. Fourteen months later a spring storm hit, both corners folded, and her mare ended up on FM 56 at dusk. Nobody was hurt, thank God. Replacing a Rotten Post the Right Way
Swapping one line post is a fair DIY job if you do it in the right order. Here’s the short version:
- Support the wire first. Loosen staples and rest the strands on temporary T-posts so tension doesn’t whip loose wire at you. Wear gloves and eye protection around barbed wire.
- Pull the old post, stub and all. A rotten stump left in the hole rots the new post faster. A farm jack and a chain wrapped low will pull most stubs.
- Dig deep. Line posts want 24 to 30 inches in the ground, corners 36 to 42. Shallow posts heave and lean long before they rot.

- Tamp in lifts and crown the top. Add dirt or crushed base a few inches at a time and tamp each layer hard. Mound the surface so water sheds away from the post.
- Re-stretch and re-staple. Angle the staples slightly and leave a hair of play so the wire can move without cutting in.
Know when to stop. If the rotten post is a corner, a gate post, or part of a long run gone slack, it’s no longer a post swap. It’s a tension system rebuild, and getting it wrong means doing the job twice. That’s where calling a crew saves money instead of costing it.
How to Keep New Fence Posts From Rotting
You can’t make a wood post immortal in Texas dirt, but you can stack the odds hard in your favor.
- Buy ground-contact treatment, not the cheap stuff. The tag matters more than the color of the wood.
- Coat the ground-line zone. Brushing copper naphthenate preservative from 6 inches above grade to 18 below adds real years, especially on cut ends.
- Never cut the buried end. Factory treatment is deepest at the original surface. Trim the top and put the untouched end in the ground.
- Crown the soil at every post. A small mound sheds water. A dished collar collects it.
- If you pour concrete, dome it above grade so water runs off instead of pooling around the wood.
- Keep grass and brush off the fence line. A clean line dries faster and lets you spot trouble early.
- Mix in steel where it counts. Pipe corners and gates with wood or T-post line posts is the workhorse setup around Waco, and it puts rot-proof material exactly where failure hurts most.
