A loose bottom strand is an open invitation to a 1,200 pound cow. Give her a sagging wire and a reason, and she’ll have her head through it by Tuesday and be standing on the county road by Friday night.

Fix the wire without fixing the cause and you’ll be back out there in six months doing it again.

Why Barbed Wire Fences Sag in the First Place
Wire doesn’t loosen itself. Something in the system gave up, and it’s almost always one of these five things.
Failed corner or end braces. This is the big one. Every ounce of tension in your fence pulls against the corners. When an H-brace leans, rots, or was never built right to begin with, the whole run goes slack. If you can push your corner post and see it move, that’s your answer.
Rotted or heaved posts. Wood posts rot at the ground line, especially in our bottomland clay that stays wet all spring. T-posts get shoved sideways by cattle scratching on them. Either way, a line post that’s leaning stops holding the wire at height. We covered this in detail in our post on leaning fence posts.
Wire stretch and metal fatigue. Barbed wire relaxes over time, especially cheaper Class 1 galvanized wire in Texas heat. A fence stretched in January will run measurably looser by August. Older wire that’s gone brittle stretches worse and snaps sooner.
Animal and tree damage. A steer leaning over the top strand to reach grass, hogs rooting under the bottom strand, or a live oak limb dropping across the line will all put permanent slack into the wire in one afternoon.
Loose or popped staples. Staples work out of wood posts over years of wire vibration. Once three or four posts in a row lose their staples, the wire’s carrying its own weight over a 50 foot span and it shows.
Walk your line before you touch a tool. Figure out which of these five you’ve got, because the fix is different for each one.

How to Fix a Sagging Barbed Wire Fence, Step by Step
Here’s the process we use on repair calls, in order. Don’t skip ahead to tightening. Tension applied to a fence with a bad brace just pulls the brace over faster.
1. Gear up first
Barbed wire under tension stores real energy. When a strand snaps, it whips. Wear leather gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection every time. Keep kids and dogs away from the work area, and never stand in line with a wire you’re stretching.
2. Check your corners and braces
Push hard on each corner and end post. Any movement at all means the brace needs attention before you tighten anything. Look for rotted brace posts, loose brace pins, and diagonal brace wire that’s gone slack. More on brace repair in the next section.
3. Fix the posts
Reset leaning T-posts by driving them plumb, or pull and re-drive them a foot down the line if the original hole is blown out. Replace rotted wood line posts. In our clay, tamp new posts in with dry dirt or crushed base in 3 to 4 inch lifts. Concrete around a wood line post usually traps water and speeds up rot, so we skip it except on gates and corners.
4. Splice any breaks properly
Don’t just twist broken ends together with pliers. Use a figure 8 knot or, better, crimp sleeves rated for your wire gauge. A proper splice holds close to the full strength of the wire. A hand twist holds maybe half, and it’s the first thing to fail when a cow hits the fence.
5. Re-tension each strand
Use a fence stretcher or a come-along with wire grips. Pull from mid-span or from an end, take up the slack, then cut out the extra wire and splice. Tension until the strand is snug and sings a little when you pluck it, but stop before the barbs start straightening or the wire visibly thins. 6. Re-staple and re-clip
On wood posts, drive new 1.75 inch barbed staples at a slight angle to the grain, and leave a hair of play so the wire can slide during temperature swings. On T-posts, replace any missing wire clips. A strand should touch every single post at the correct height, top strand around 48 to 54 inches for cattle.
7. Walk it again
Sight down the line from each end. Every strand should run straight and level. If one span still dips, you’ve got a low post or a missed staple.
Dale Hoffman, who runs about 40 momma cows outside Crawford, spent a whole summer chasing slack this way, about $180 in wire, clips, and splice sleeves across three separate Saturdays. The wire wasn’t his problem. His northeast corner post had rotted below grade and was slowly laying over. We rebuilt that one corner as an H-brace for $650, re-tensioned the two runs pulling off it, and the fence has stayed drum tight for two years since.
Fixing a Sagging Barbed Wire Fence at the Corners: Braces Do the Heavy Lifting
If there’s one thing to take from this article, it’s this: 8 out of 10 chronically saggy fences we see have a brace problem, not a wire problem.
A proper H-brace is two posts set 8 feet apart, a horizontal cross member between them, and a diagonal brace wire twisted tight. The horizontal member pushes the posts apart while the twisted wire pulls the assembly square, so the corner can resist thousands of pounds of pull without leaning. Signs your brace has failed:
- The corner post leans toward the fence line
- The diagonal brace wire is slack or broken
- The horizontal cross member has dropped or rotted out
- Wire tension disappears within weeks of every re-stretch
You can rebuild an H-brace yourself if you’re handy, but it takes a post hole digger or auger, proper 6 inch or larger posts set 3.5 feet deep, and getting the diagonal wire wrapped in the right direction. Wrap it the wrong way and the brace actually pulls itself apart under load. If that sentence made you squint, this is a good spot to hand it off. Here’s what typical repairs run in the Waco area, both if you do it yourself and if you hire us. Your numbers will move with rock, access, and how far gone the fence is.

Notice the jump on that last line. Once wire has been re-stretched two or three times, or it’s rusted through its galvanization, repair money starts chasing a fence that’s done. Marcy Vlasek, north of West, learned that math the honest way. A spring storm dropped a big hackberry limb across her east line and flattened about 60 feet of it. The emergency repair to get her heifers contained ran $480. But the re-stretch showed her 30 year old wire snapping at every splice point, so she put in a quarter mile of new 5 strand that fall for about $3,900 instead of feeding another decade of repair calls.
How to Keep Barbed Wire Tight Year Round
Tightening the fence is half the job. Keeping it tight is a habit, and it’s a cheap one compared to chasing cattle at midnight.
Walk or ride your lines twice a year. Spring after storm season and late fall before winter is the minimum. You’re looking for leaning posts, slack strands, popped staples, and rubbed spots. Ten minutes per quarter mile.
Keep trees and brush off the line. Limbs are the number one cause of sudden fence damage in our area. Trim anything overhanging the wire.
Watch your water gaps. Creek crossings blow out in every big rain and put slack into the adjoining runs. Check them after every gully washer.
Fix small slack immediately. One loose strand teaches cattle to test the fence. Once they learn a fence gives, they never unlearn it, and you inherit a herd of fence testers.
Control hogs where you can. Feral hogs root under bottom strands and shove through fences, and the damage compounds fast. USDA’s Wildlife Services program tracks the problem and offers control resources at usda.gov.
Mind the seasons. Wire contracts in cold and relaxes in heat, so a fence stretched banjo tight in a January cold snap can overload your braces, and one stretched in August will hang loose come winter. Aim for firm and singing, not violin string.

When to Stop Patching and Call a Pro
Plenty of fence work is honest DIY territory. Re-clipping T-posts, driving new staples, splicing a break, tightening a strand or two. Have at it.
But call in help when you hit any of these:
- Corner and brace rebuilds. Bad geometry here undoes everything downstream.
- Full re-stretches of old wire. Brittle wire under tension is genuinely dangerous. It snaps without warning and it does not care where your face is.
- Fence along a road. In most of Texas outside open range areas, a stock law county puts the liability on you if your cattle get onto the highway. That fence needs to be right, not close.
- Storm damage with livestock loose. Speed matters more than pride. Get the animals contained.
- Anything involving rock. If your post holes need a breaker bar or a hydraulic auger, your weekend is better spent elsewhere.

Snug enough that each strand runs straight between posts with no visible dip, and gives a light ring when you pluck it. You should be able to deflect it an inch or so with firm hand pressure. Tighter than that starts straightening barbs, thinning wire, and overloading your corner braces, which shortens the life of the whole fence.
Can I re-tighten old rusty barbed wire, or does it need replacing?
You can usually get one more stretch out of wire with surface rust if the metal underneath is still sound. But if the wire snaps during tensioning, flakes when you bend it, or breaks at old splices, it’s done. At that point every repair dollar is borrowed time, and new Class 3 galvanized wire is the cheaper path over the next 20 years.
